Lies of p platform5/7/2023 Assuming that each tweet contains 20 words on average, the volume of content published on Twitter in one single day will be equivalent to that of New York Times in 182 years. Take Twitter as an example: It is estimated that 500 million tweets are sent per day. The sheer volume of content shared on social media makes it impossible to establish a comprehensive editorial system. While I believe it is naïve to consider social media as merely neutral content sharing technologies with no responsibility, I do not believe that we should either have the same level of editorial expectation from social media that we have from traditional news media. As social media practically become news media, their level of responsibility over the content which they distribute should increase accordingly. Twitter moments, in which you can see a brief snapshot of the daily news, is a prime example of how Twitter is getting closer to becoming a news media. In addition to that, their users are increasingly using these platforms as the primary source of getting their news. ![]() In the intervening years, they have since set up a mix of automated and human driven editorial processes to promote or filter certain types of content. Artificial and Human Intelligence togetherĪt the beginning, social media companies established themselves not to hold any accountability over the content being published on its platform. I argue that these companies should take some responsibility over the content that is published on their platforms and suggest a set of strategies to help them with dealing with fake news and hate speech. On the other hand, one can argue that social media platforms have now evolved curators of content. There are two ways to consider a social media platform: On one hand, we can view them as technologies that merely enable individuals to publish and share content, a figurative blank sheet of paper on which anyone can write anything. However, being blocked will not stop us from continuing our work and our endeavours to reach out to Russian audiences.Twitter media companies are under increased scrutiny for their mishandling of hateful speech and fake news on their platforms. We regret that Russian audiences are now prevented from accessing the EUvsDisinfo website. EUvsDisinfo content explaining the mechanisms of disinformation and information manipulation – such as the timeline of disinformation targeting Ukraine, ‘ ’Kremlin Newspeak’’ and ‘’ What the Kremlin says, what it means’’ – as well as quick responses to Russia’s lies and manipulations have become increasingly popular and appreciated by audiences in different parts of the world. ![]() Our work has proved especially important since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with as many as 2.3 million people visiting the website in 2022 alone. For seven years, we have closely monitored disinformation, helping build the resilience of the public against information manipulation and giving a platform to independent voices from Russia and Eastern Partnership countries. With EUvsDisinfo, the European Union’s first response to Russia’s disinformation campaigns, has been raising awareness of Russia’s manipulations of the information environment since 2015. ![]() At the same time it is leaving no place in Russia for voices independent from the Kremlin, eliminating any space for criticism of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and other actions and decisions by Putin’s regime. ![]() The decision by Roskomnadzor confirms what we have been cautioning about for years – the Kremlin is flooding domestic and foreign public space not only with propaganda but also targeted disinformation. Over the past seven years, both Russian officials and pro-Kremlin media pundits have consistently sought to diminish or ridicule EUvsDisinfo’s work. Roskomnadzor’s decision is part of a broader attempt of Russian government to supress the facts about its war of aggression against Ukraine, hide from Russian citizens the truth about its illegal actions in Ukraine and prevent Kremlin’s disinformation machine from being exposed in front of its own population. Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media regulator, blocked the EUvsDisinfo website on 8 October, making it inaccessible from Russia.
